The Peel Pyramid: Finding the Right Peel for You

Peels peels peels. You cannot visit a beauty blog or flip through a beauty magazine without seeing some mention of a peel. But what really is a peel and what does it do?

A peel is a controlled chemical burn. How much tissue is destroyed is based on the type of peel, duration of the peel, and degree of neutralizing. While is sounds gruesome, it really isn’t. Peels can vary from very light with little flaking to deep with significant down time. Most often the lighter peels get the spotlight because they can give a nice temporary glow with no real down-time. If a more substantial result is desired a stronger peel may be in order, or you may wish to choose the laser route.

Here at Anushka Spa and Cosmedical Centre our highly trained and  experienced aestheticians utilize Skin Medica’s (Allergan Company) professional peel line. The most potent of these peels is the Rejuvenize Peel™ for moderate to more severe skin imperfections.

The Rejuvenize Peel® contains several acids including salicylic, mandelic, resorcinol, malic, phytic, and panthenol. While discomfort tolerance varies from person to person the peel is generally accepted as very tolerable especially when a fan is used. The heat and tingling sensation really only last a few minutes. Your aesthetic provider will apply a serum afterward to assist in achieving a good result. Flaking, maybe peeling will occur up to 5 days.

The Vitalize Peel® is the next in line that helps promote vibrant, radiant looking skin with minimal downtime. You can smooth the appearance of fine lines and roughness with a noticeable difference with just one, but a series of three to six peels will greatly enhance the results. The magic ingredients include salicylic acid, resorcinol, lactic acid, and panthenol (a by-product of vitamin B5). The peeling is less than with the Rejuvenize Peel® but the results are worth the less downtime.

The Illuminize Peel® is the mildest of the Skin Medica™ peels. It is intended for mild skin imperfections and for those desiring a brightening glow. There really is no downtime and the refreshed glow will allow makeup to look smooth and flawless.

For those that want a bit more effect toward perfection, the PEARL Laser by Cutera provides a nice removal of the epidermis and a tiny bit of the dermis in order to provide new growth that is free of the flaws that have been the result of time and element exposure. Usually, my patients will do this laser twice with about 6 weeks in between to achieve the optimal results. To achieve a complication rate of 0, I will pretreat patients with an antibiotic and antiviral medication. Because we apply a topical numbing agent before treatment, the laser is nearly painless!
