Skin Tightening Series: Heat Sources

As we age, we produce less collagen each year, our hormones change, and we also lose the fine layer of fat under the skin that keeps everything looking rather perfect. After a while, we notice that we are seeing the skin in certain areas look a bit like crepe paper. We also see that some areas are starting to sag…for whatever reason, this happens to present itself to us almost “suddenly”, like we never saw it before. Left untreated…this unwanted trend continues, and continues…

While no one has developed the magic machine that will return our skin to its “twenty-something” brilliance, there are methods and treatments that can help…sometimes a lot. The main caveat: Your skin didn’t get in this shape overnight, and because we continue to move on, we need to continue treatments as long as we care about our appearance. Some treatments however are more efficacious than others. In this three-part series I will discuss the three modalities of skin tightening.

Heat Sources

Heat sources may be light sources, lasers, ultrasound, or radio frequency. Most of these treatments refine the skin gradually and results are often seen after the third or fourth treatment. For the most part, aside form ultrasound, they are not painful, sometimes actually pleasant, and work by destroying a bit of the old, worn out collagen, creating a degree of inflammation, and stimulating the production of new collagen. New collagen is fresh and tightly wound, adding the firmness and resilience reflective of your skin of younger years.

Often these results are subtle. They certainly do not match the result of a neck lift or facelift. They are ideal though for those areas off the face and neck such as the décolleté, arms (especially upper), abdomen, inner thighs and above the knee area. These are the areas of most concern for many patients who are active with golf, tennis, and society parties. While the results are subtle as earlier stated, there definitely is a difference. Also, the more treatments one has, the more improvement one will see.
